Catholic Schools

Some of you may know, that I grew up a practicing Catholic. My parents paid for Catholic Schools from the first grade all the way to high school. Growing up in the city, public schools were not the greatest. They were also overcrowded. For this reason, I did my First Holy Communion at the age of 7 and my Confirmation at the age of 12.

In a Catholic School where uniforms are a must, Holy Communion became a big fashion show of sorts. There were many things that had to be purchased. There was a special necklace that was to be worn under the collar of the dress. Of course, there was the dress. (It resembled the dress of a flower girl in a wedding.) There was also the crown. That brings us to the shawl, shoes, gloves and purse. Let's just say it was a long list. Then there were the first communion gifts. Yes, there were special photo albums to hold the pictures taken by the hired preofessional photographers. (I'm sure now parents hire pros that take videos of that special day.) Parents could buy special rosaries, bibles and more! (Now you can do all this shopping online. Just follow the link....)

For the benefit of those that don't know or imagine what it was like to be in Catholic School, I'm adding a new series to this blog. My friend (from high school) and I are going to tell you stories about our experiences. Be sure to visit often, because it WILL BE ENTERTAINING!

Die Rich?

Many, many years ago I saw an infomercial called "Die Rich!" I watched it because the title caught my attention. Why in the world would anyone want to die rich? I sat down dumbfounded. I had to see what the pitch was. What the heck could they be selling?

The infomercial begins with lots of fanfare. This guy comes on and starts talking about how expensive funerals are. He talks about the gift tax, reverse mortgages and the financial duress surviving spouses encounter when their other half dies. The information he was selling shared how you can die rich. In other words, you may be financially fit in your golden years...but once you die your spouse and children become wealthy. Now, I always laughed at the saying, "You can't take it with you!" Well because it's true! But to figure out how you can prepare everything so that your legacy becomes wealthy...that's unbelievable.

How do people die rich?
The one thing that I came away with was Death insurance. It sounds crazy, but it's true. Death insurance is important, especially if you have a spouse and young dependents. A neighbor of mine always told me that. She specialized in dealing with estates in the bank she was employed with. She often spoke about having extra coverage. She told me she had so much insurance that everything would be paid if something happened to her or her husband. She died in the twin towers. Her family is well taken care of today. So many of us don't take that step, but the reality is tomorrow isn't promised to anyone. You never really know what the future holds.

Still at the time, being single it effect me the way it does now. Dying and leaving a child diagnosed with autism is very scary. It's time I take the appropriate steps and look into what I can do to make sure he is taken care of.

Do You Shop Online to Save Money?

I know what you're thinking. That is an oxymoron. But is it? You can shop and save money at the same time. This happens when you are buying something you need and are paying less than the retail price. In my case, it happens when I shop alone or online.

How can you shop and save money?
Here's the way I see it.
1. Shopping online saves time and money. How? You never have to leave your home. You don't waste time traveling, finding parking and then waiting on line to make a purcahse. You also don't spend any gas...which is going to ridiculous in the near future.
2. I love the fact that I don't have to make a million trips to the bathroom with the kids. I also don't have to waste time strapping them and unstrapping them into their carseats.
3. I don't have to spend money on the inevitable cry:
"I'M HUNGRY OR I'M THIRSTY!"
4. When you find a site like the one I found, you can save money on shipping and handling!

There you go, four great reasons why shopping online can save you money. Now let's talk about the site I found! Powell furniture has the cutest furnishings and they give you FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING! That is a great reason to shop here. Browse through the site and see how great their prices are. Bookmark it for future reference because prices like these (with Free shipping and handling) are hard to find!

Get Ready for Your Vacation With the Right Luggage

Summer is around the corner and school is finishing soon. Many families are getting ready for their family vacations. Part of that ritual, is packing the suitcases. There are many choices out there. Be sure to find the right one for you and your family. Here are some tips to help you choose the right luggage.

Do you have the right luggage?
1. If you are a small family, pack light. Duffle bags and backpacks may be just the trick.
2. If you have small children, you may want to have luggage with wheels. That way you can keep a hand on your child, while rolling your luggage.
3. When you have a special needs child (like I do), you may want to buy luggage that can be brought on the plane. A luggage that has wheels, but is also small enough to fit in the overhead baggage compartment would be ideal. You don't want to come off a long flight and have to wait for luggage. Your child may not be able to handle it.

I hope you find these tips useful. Enjoy your vacation and make lots of great memories!

Four Reasons Why Advertising Pens Are Great Viral Marketing Tools!

There are many ways to advertise your business, blog or organization. One of the most inexpensive and viral ways to accomplish this by giving away advertising pens. Whether you are a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, TupperWare Rep. or a Blogger you can get a lot from your advertising dollar by ordering pens that have your business, logo, URL and/or phone number.

How can advertising pens help your business?
1. Remember, not everyone is tech savvy. There are plenty of customers that are being overlooked if you just advertise online.
2. It's easy to leave a pen wherever you go. Pens exchange hands very, very quickly. Working in a bank for 7 years, I can tell you that pens were hard to keep. Customers accidentally walked off with them all the time.
3. Everyone needs a pen! Carry them with you with your business cards. You can even give them out to your kids, nephews and nieces. Eventually they will end up in the hands of an adult.
4. People love to get free stuff. They love it even more, when it's stuff they can really use. T-shirts and pens are always successful promotional products at fairs and shows.

There you go, four reasons why you should order advertising pens to help you get a buzz about your product or service.

Target, Bratz and the Number 11

PDD-Nos Memoirs

Two weeks ago, I went to the mall with the kids and Little One's father. I had just watched a video about an autistic savant that is able to calculate complex math equations in his mind. That's not the astonishing part. The mind blowing part is that he just sees the answers. He feels numbers and each has a shape and texture?!

I had spoken to Little One's Dad about how he maps out every store I shop at. He can find the Crayola aisle in every store I've ever visited. If there is something I have a hard time with, it's actually visualizing maps in my mind. I can easily memorize text and numbers. When I retain information, I see it on a page in my mind. He must similarly map locations in his mind, finding a way to organize twists and turns.

I'm fascinated with his abilities. That's not unusual for me. Growing up I was always intrigued by geniuses. I used to read about children that could paint with one hand, while writing in Latin with the other. So, when I found these videos of Daniel Tammet at the great blog Autistic Savant, I sat down and watched them all. I always knew that his brain was wired differently, I just didn't understand how. These videos helped me a little.

Back to the mall. As we were walking, The Little One stepped in front of us and said Target, Bratz fashion pixies...eleven. Now, I understood the Target and Bratz direction. I had purchased one for him at that location. (Remember, he loves Barbie, My Scene and Bratz. He says they look like The Princess and The Diva). The funny part was the eleven. Recalling what I had seen on the video, I decided to go with The Diva and look for a sign on the aisle. I had to see if there was any type of correlation. Why would he just randomly say ELEVEN?

I went to the Bratz aisle and looked for a sign. No sign. The aisles were not clearly numbered. I walked back and forth looking for a #11 at his eye level. I missed it completely. See while I was looking for a number, The Diva walked back to the beginning of the aisles and counted forward. The Bratz aisle in our Target is found in ROW NUMBER ELEVEN.

We celebrated our findings as we made our way back to him. Just as we thought, he went directly back to the aisle. He looked at the dolls and said "Bratz Fashion Pixies Eleven!"

I love when we find pieces to a puzzle. It's almost like we saw into his mind...
