I Hate Winter Weather in NY!

When you live in NY, the winter months mean snow. When you live upstate, you better get ready for lots of it.

The past 7 days have been especially annoying. Last Wednesday, we got snow. That was followed by more snow on Thursday. It wouldn't be so irritating if my driveway wasn't the length of a city block. The worst part is that it's really steep too. The snow was accompanied by frigid temperature. School was cancelled on Thursday. Since it was supposed to snow on Friday, I figured we would shovel then. It didn't snow, so the district decided to open the school. The Little One and The Princess didn't attend. There was no way we could make it up that driveway and since I missed the bus, that meant I would have to drive them. The driveway, the minivan and the Corolla were covered in snow. The worst part was the ice.

It snowed....again on Saturday and Sunday. The driveway was covered and it cost $60.00 to clear it. A thin layer of snow couldn't be removed. We left it thinking it would melt. Little did we know.

This afternoon, I had to take Little One's dad to the bus stop. On the way back, I got stuck at the top of the driveway. I almost ended up on the neighbor's fence. I backed up and tried again. That's when the minivan fishtailed and starting sliding down the driveway...sideways. I thought I was going to die.

I called the school's transportation department to alert them of my situation. The Little One would be home in less than 45 minutes. The worst part was that every time I took my foot of the brake pedal, the minivan would slide further down the driveway. (This is even after I put the emergency brake on and shut the van off!)

What did I end up doing?
I called my car insurance...Geico. See, when I got my changed insurance company this year I paid a little extra for AAA. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. My minivan and car have been towed about 5 times in the last 6 months. I accidentally locked the keys in the car too. All of these incidents would have cost me. Instead, I called my insurance and they took care of it.

How did it turn out?
The bus depot was pretty rude. She wasn't paying attention when I started by telling her my 6 year old autisitic son was coming home and I couldn't get out of a sliding minivan. I explained that my teens' bus usually arrived at the same time, but she wanted to have my son brought back to the depot after the bus run. He would be arriving at the depot about 5pm. That is two hours after he would normally get home. Then. she wanted to send him down the driveway! Umm, I explained once again...HE IS AUTISTIC. It registered the second time. Yup, and to make matters worse-the bus arrives and he has to get off immediately. His nose bleed is a major concern. Could you believe it? He got a nose bleed and they were a freaked out. Thank God that at that moment...the other bus with my teens arrived. They took him off the bus, while I attempted to scale the side of my steep driveway.

Let's just say, that was a challenging week. Yeah, imagine how grocery shopping played out. Groceries for a household with 6 kids, 7 cats and a dog is challenging as it is. Add scaling or sliding down a steep hill and it's a sitcom. I had to leave the van parked at the top of the driveway. I live in a rural community, so we don't have any sidewalks. The van took up half of the two way street. I had no other choice. I couldn't get the van down my driveway, without it crashing into the garage or plummeitng into a ditch.

I think my kids are tired of hearing me rant. I say it everytime it snows. If I had the money and the resources to provide for Little One's therapy, I would spend the winter months in Puerto Rico with my family and then return for the mild weather. There are many things I love about living in the country. Getting piles and piles of snow. That's not one of them.
